The Church of Santa Maria de Taüll is one of the most outstanding Romanesque monuments in the Boí Valley (Alta Ribagorça, Lleida Pyrenees) and is part of the famous Catalan Romanesque complex, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000 for its exceptional artistic and archaeological coherence. The Romanesque churches in this complex, including Santa Maria, constitute the most important concentration of Romanesque architecture in Europe in a rural mountain environment that has remained almost intact since the Middle Ages.  Located in the center of the old town of Taüll, Santa Maria was consecrated on December 11, 1123, one day after the neighboring Sant Climent, which demonstrates the economic and cultural importance that the lords of Erill granted to this place at the beginning of the 12th century.  The architecture of Santa Maria de Taüll follows the Lombard Romanesque style characteristic of the area, with an original plan of three naves ending in three semicircular apses and a five-story bell tower decorated with blind arches and ornamental elements typical of Pyrenean Romanesque. Over the centuries, the church underwent renovations, but during the 1970s many of the later modifications were removed to return it to its original appearance.  One of the most fascinating aspects of Santa Maria is its relationship with medieval mural painting. Originally the interior of the walls and apse was decorated with Romanesque frescoes of high artistic value that, at the beginning of the 20th century, were transferred to the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) for conservation. Today, copies and interpretations can be seen that help visualize what the temple was like in its medieval heyday.  Visiting Santa Maria de Taüll offers an experience that combines history, art and spirituality in a mountain setting. Its location in the village centre makes it easy to integrate it into walking routes through Taüll and tourist routes through the Romanesque complex of the valley, thus complementing cultural exploration with the traditional and rural atmosphere of the Catalan Pyrenees.
